This collection consists of diaries of four-time Carbondale mayor, state representative, and Southern Illinois Normal University board member Ezekiel Ingersoll for parts of 1886, 1888, 1889, and 1920. Carbondale voting role (n.d.) and tax ledger from 1876. Ledgers from Ingersoll's jewelry business are from 1878, 1891-1894, 1916-1919. There is also a notebook of undated speeches.

Ezekiel J. Ingersoll was born in Greensburg, Indiana, on November 18, 1836. Soon after his family moved to Carbondale, Illinois in 1859, he became the proprietor of a jewelry business, located in Carbondale. During the Civil War Ingersoll served in the Union Army, enlisting in Company H, 73rd Illinois Infantry on July 20, 1862, and achieving the rank of Captain after the Battle of Stone River.
